Report on the 2000 Red Lion 10K

Sunday 13th August at Hernhill near Faversham

Anthony Webb won a close-fought battle with Ashford AC clubmate Kevin Williams to win the Faversham Times-sponsored Red Lion 10K Road Race on Sunday 13th August. After running neck and neck for much of the race, Webb just managed to open up a gap in the latter stages. The hot, humid conditions and the challenging nature of the course meant that the top two were the only ones to finish inside 35 minutes, in 34:48 and 34:55, respectively. Williams had the consolation of being top veteran over 40 and David Davies (Maidstone Harriers; 35:17) and Terry Knightley (Ilford AC; 35:36) were awarded second and third prizes in the men's race. Canterbury Harrier Mike Conway took the Vet 50 prize in a time of 39:10. The Webb and Williams 1-2, together with Paul Tee's fifth place meant that Ashford were clear winners in the team competition.

Tina Oldershaw of Paddock Wood AC won the women's race comfortably in a time of 38:47, with Invicta East Kent's Jane Fraser being second home and taking the veteran 35 prize in a time of 39:20. Caroline Houghton (Medway AC; 41:15) and Alyson Parlyett (Bexley AC; 41:55) took the second and third prizes, respectively. Pat Halstead of Swanley & District AC was the leading over 45 veteran in a time of 47:39. Jane Fraser also led the Invicta East Kent AC team to victory, aided by clubmates Mary Drewitt and Sue Davis.

A total of 292 entered the race, which was organised by Canterbury Harriers, with 267 finishing the course which started and finished by the Red Lion pub in Hernhill near Faversham. All the finishers received mementos in the form of mini beer mugs and some competitors received spot prizes in the form of T shirts provided by Shepherd Neame.
